The world's oldest wooden anchor was discovered in the mud at the bottom of the sea at a Turkish port in the Aegean Sea.

From the end of the 7th century BC, the anchor may fall off a ship when it comes from the Greek colony of Klazomenai near the port of Urla of Turkey today. A part of the port was washed out to sea in a natural disaster soon after, burying the anchor 1.5 meters deep beneath the sediment.

"Urla is a very ancient port that was excavated earlier. At the bottom of the sea we found a layer of seaweed and a lot of pottery underneath. At that time, the anchor was part of this and still be Conservation so far, "said Michal Artzy at the Maritime Research Institute of Haifa University in Israel.
