The shrimp species Barbicambarus simmonsi has a length of up to 13 cm

' When looking at the shape of this shrimp, many fishermen will not think of it as a shrimp but some strange creature, ' said Dr. Chris Taylor, an oceanographer at the University of Illinois. ' Although this shrimp is very large, it is difficult to detect them because they often live under the cliffs '.

Scientists have discovered the first individual of this new shrimp under one of the largest subterranean cliffs in the deep waters of Tennessee (USA). This new species, named Barbicambarus simmonsi, is up to 13cm long, has a long beard and lots of body hair.

So far, more than a quarter of the world's 600 shrimp species have been discovered in North American waters. Scientists believe that there are many new species of shrimp that have not been discovered in the waters with the most depth in this world.
