Discovered an ancient stone statue weighing 12.5 tons in Mexico City
Mexican archaeologists discovered a 12.5-ton monolithic statue at the ruins of an ancient Aztec temple in downtown Mexico, with an impressive 4m height.
(Photo: HTV) The statue has not been excavated yet, but a portion of it is brought to the surface revealed this is a great sculpture of the land god of the Aztec nation.
The stone statue was discovered at the Mayor temple (the main temple) built by the Aztecs in 1375, now the Zocalo square in the heart of the Mexican capital. Previously, this temple could be used to sacrifice human bodies.
Archaeologists think the statue can be placed in front of a room entrance.
This is not the first time a monumental work of Aztecs has been discovered. It was found that the stone blocks used to make the famous calendar of Aztecs weighed up to 24 tons.
The Aztec dynasty began in 1325. This ancient nomadic tribe established an empire in the Gulf of Mexico for more than a century. After years of fighting, the Spanish conquered the Americas and ended the history of this empire in 1520.
