Pharaoh 'rises': Close up of the great 3,000-year-old sight of Egypt
Some parts of the 8-meter statue were given to archaeologists Ramses II, the famous pharaoh, excavated by archaeologists, with the upper half of the statue weighing 8 tons.
The statue was discovered on March 7 at the ruins of the temple of Ramses II in the former area of Heliopolis, today east of Cairo, Egypt. Archaeologists believe that this is a statue of the famous pharaoh Ramses II , who ruled Egypt 3,000 years ago.In the picture is the lower half of the head being hoisted.(Photo: Getty).
Khaled al-Anani, Minister of Egyptian Ancient Monuments, said the statue is made of quartzite.This type of stone has great hardness, good weathering, high compressive strength.(Photo: AP).
In addition to the lower part of the head, archaeologists also found half a body, a crown and a piece of the right eye. Mr. Anani affirmed that this is "one of the most important findings" .(Photo: Xinhua News Agency).
In addition to the 8m statue, archaeologists unearthed the upper part of a carved limestone statue of Pharaoh Seti II , the grandson of Pharaoh Ramses II, about 80cm long.Experts are trying to unearth the remains of both statues before proceeding to restore.(Photo: Getty).
If they succeed and the authentic statue is King Ramses II, it will be taken to the Great Egyptian Museum scheduled to be inaugurated at Giza in 2018.
