Discovered ancient fortress more than 2,000 years old of Egypt

Part of the citadel made of mud bricks consists of towers in the northeast and southeast at the location of Tell El-Kedwa in North Sinai. Previously, in 2008, archaeologists unearthed the eastern wall of the military citadel, but the fortress was too big to excavate more than the rest of it until now.

This is a prime location for a fortress. Even archaeologists found the remnants of a military outpost earlier built on top.

The area of archaeologists discovered the remnants of ancient stronghold in Egypt.

The fort was originally considered one of the oldest fortresses discovered in Egypt, Moustafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt, said.

The walls of the old fortress were determined to be 7 meters thick and had four towers. Meanwhile, the newer fortresses built in the following centuries were even more protected, with walls 11 meters thick and comprising a total of 16 towers.

The old citadel also has sandy rooms, broken pottery and debris. These chambers can be used as storm drains, characteristic of the 26th dynasty.

In addition, archaeologists reveal the presence of an entrance to the ancient fortress, in the form of a side gate to the northeast of the wall. Just to the right of this entrance is the rest of the room may have been occupied by guardians watching the gate.

The excavation also discovered a wall nearly 85 meters south of the fortress and the rest of the houses on the west side of the fortress. One of these houses has an amulet with the name of King Psamtik I , who expelled Assyria from Egypt and unified the country when he founded the 26th Dynasty. He died in 610 BC.

This is also an important base for the research to determine that the fortress probably originated in the first half of the 26th dynasty, especially the era of King Psamtik I.
