Discovered giant camel fossils

Swiss archaeologists from the Universities of Bâle and Zurich discovered the bones of a giant camel while excavating in the steppe in Central Syria.

This is an unprecedented camel species with a height of over 3 meters. This animal is almost as tall as a giraffe.

According to archaeologists, this camel lived 100,000 years ago. Its size is almost twice as large as normal camels. Professor Jean-Marie Le Tensorer, archeology department at the University of Bâle, affirmed that this is a new camel.

The camel was discovered near the village of El Kown 120km northeast of Palmyre. This is also where archaeologists discovered one of the oldest settlements of humanity. People have passed through this place nearly 1 million years ago.

In the countless stone tools, many of the huge shoulders, legs and jaws of the giant camel were excavated. Due to the special shape, the foot bone has allowed the fossil animal to be identified.

According to Professor Le Tensorer, this giant camel may be the target of hunting. This finding has helped elucidate the evolution of camel species so far unknown. It is not known whether the humped camel or the humpback species was born first.
