The Russian expert group led by Viktor Vahoneev, head of the Department of Underwater Archeology of the Black Sea Bottom Research Center, recently discovered the wreck named Black Sea Prince, located in the missing British fleet in Crimea in Sevastopol campaign in the 1850s, Express on 8/12 reported.
The ship carried 30 barrels of gold coins to pay soldiers to participate in the Crimea War and to provide funding for British war in the region. However, the entire fleet of 34 ships was sunk due to a storm and was unable to dock. "We think these ships sank after a storm on November 14 , 1854, " Vahoneev said.
Metal artifacts were found by the Russian team in five ships on the seabed.
Russian experts found five ships while constructing a pier in Yevpatoria city east of the Crimea, 1.6 km from the shore.Three of the five ships, including the Black Prince, carry the British royal emblem.The other two ships are believed to be in France.
Analysis of the wreck indicates that all three British ships were sunk by the storm and there was no sign of damage in combat.The team is looking to build ships and transfer collected artifacts to the underwater archaeological museum.
