Discovering strange species of blind snake in Brazil

Dr. Julian Tupan and colleagues from Santo Antonio Power Company discovered 6 individuals of a strange animal on the bottom of the hydroelectric dam on the Madeira River in Rondonia, Brazil. These individuals have the scientific name atretochoana eiselti.

A new animal with a strange shape was discovered by ecologists at the heart of a hydroelectric lake on a river in Rondonia, Brazil.

Dr. Julian Tupan and colleagues from Santo Antonio Power Company discovered 6 individuals of a strange animal on the bottom of the hydroelectric dam on the Madeira River in Rondonia, Brazil. These individuals have the scientific name atretochoana eiselti .

In fact, six individuals of atretochoana eiselti were discovered in November 2011, but they were only published recently after scientists identified them as a rare new species. Local people said they discovered this species for the first time since 1968.

The species atretochoana eiselti is about 1m long and has no eyes. Although superficially like snakes, they are not of reptiles but have close relatives with salamanders and frogs.

Dr. Julian Tupan said: 'Of the 6 individuals Atretochoana eiselti we caught, 1 was dead, 3 were released naturally and the other 2 were kept for research. We think they breathe through the skin and can eat small fish and worms, but have yet to prove it. "
