Doctors point out two main causes of milk poisoning

There are two main causes of milk poisoning: the milk may be contaminated with bacteria or the milk may contain toxins due to the milk's uncertain origin.

On October 17, specialist doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of City Children's Hospital (HCMC), said there are two main groups of causes leading to milk poisoning.

  • The first is contaminated milk . When packaging or packaging boxes are torn, open, leaking, or milk is left beyond its expiration date, milk stored in an inappropriate environment can be contaminated with staphylococcus, salmonella, E.coli, fungal infections. cause poisoning.
  • The second is the group of milk that is toxic , has not been tested for safety, and the origin is unclear. Milk is prepared with a formula that contains ingredients that are too high, and ingredients left for too long can cause deterioration and poisoning.

People with milk poisoning will also have some typical symptoms such as : abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea. In more severe cases, the poisoned person can fall into a coma, convulsions, and acute respiratory failure.

"As soon as symptoms of poisoning are detected, children and patients should be taken quickly to a medical facility. During that time, water and oresol should be supplemented to rehydrate and remineralize patients due to vomiting and diarrhea." flow ," Dr. Tien shared.

To limit milk poisoning, Dr. Tien recommends that parents should choose milk from a reliable source, quality tested, with a long expiry date, and with a safety stamp. In addition, depending on the child's milk consumption level, you can choose a small 450g box to use for about 1-2 weeks. For older children, if using 900g milk in large quantities, it should be used for about 2-4 weeks or as recommended on the packaging. Should not be used longer than 4 weeks after opening the box.

"Some signs of contaminated milk that parents need to pay attention to are lumps, loss of smoothness, discoloration .", the doctor shared.

According to recommendations of the Food Quality Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Management Board, when buying canned, packaged milk and dairy products., we need to pay attention to production time or expiration date. In addition, you also need to look carefully to make sure the product's packaging is intact, not dented, bulging, rusty, or has dents.

Choose to buy products at stores that meet safety conditions such as: Products are placed in a cool place, not displayed directly in sunlight, do not place too many milk cartons on top of each other or many product cartons. Other products pile up on milk cartons; For yogurt products, storage conditions must be ensured according to the manufacturer's requirements.
