(Photo: HTV) The Shannon dolphin and animal organization (SDWF) studied a group of about 100 big-nose dolphins that lived in the Shannon estuary and recorded their cries on the computer.
As part of a research project, student Ronan Hickey digitized and analyzed 1,882 cries of Irish dolphins and dolphins in Cardigan Bay off Wales. He distinguished 32 types of cries that could be classified into 6 large groups.
Ronan notes that the majority of the vocals are used by two groups of dolphins, but there are 8 types of cries used only by Irish dolphins.
'We have created a list of dolphin calls and tried to classify the voices that came with behaviors like finding, resting, getting used to, and communicating with baby dolphins. This can be seen as a dictionary of words or sounds that dolphins emit, ' explained Professor Simon Berrow, SDWF project director.
Marine biologist Berrow claims that dolphins use bangs to navigate and locate prey. Their cries were used to communicate, they could emit a variety of sounds like the barking of dogs, growls and gunshots.
