Many people rely on coffee to help regain alertness at work and avoid sleepiness during the daytime. However, obviously, a short sleep is much better than relying too much on stimulants like coffee.

Using too much coffee instead of a daytime nap can alter your biological clock, making you more tired when you go back to the dark and having a hard night's sleep.

However, few people know that combining coffee and a short nap turns out to be a great way to recharge and increase alertness.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, drinking coffee and then taking a nap for 20-30 minutes brings a significant improvement in alertness , performance and mood for a person. Researchers believe that alertness and energy production are due to the effects of adenosine, a chemical that stimulates sleep.

Abbas Kanani, Chemist Click pharmacist said: " Adenosine is a chemical found in the human body. It contributes to regulating sleep by inhibiting the central nervous system in relation to alertness. Adenosine usually accumulates when you are awake and may at some point make you tired and craving for sleep.

Meanwhile, coffee helps you to be more alert to sleepiness. Natural sleep reduces the level of adenosine and the effect when caffeine enters the body can help you stay alert during the day. You don't need to worry about not being able to sleep after drinking coffee. Because according to Kanani, the alertness effect of coffee only starts to develop after about 20-30 minutes after drinking.

"Studies show that drinking caffeinated beverages and then taking a nap is a good way to drink. But that's just a little bit of research."

For example, in 2003, a similar study also investigated whether a nap with coffee could reduce the level of sleepiness in participants. At that time only 10 people participated in the study.

Research in 1997 also found that taking about 200mg of caffeine before a brief 15-minute nap helped improve alertness. But at that time, only 12 people participated in the study.

Hall insists, don't abuse coffee. When you are tired, you will tend to find coffee to dispel sleepiness. But the most important thing is not to drink too much or it will affect the quality of sleep and lead to many health problems.
