Earthquake due to ... urbanization

On February 23, scientists warned, the risk of earthquakes is increasing with rapid urbanization around the world, especially the emergence of more and more megacities in developing countries.

US and UN demographers forecast that in the next 15 years, the urban population in East Asia will double and the rate of urbanization in Southeast Asia and China will increase five times faster. The number of megacities in East Asia with a population of 10 million or more will increase from 5 cities in 2007 to 8 cities by 2025.

In addition to the impact of natural disasters due to climate change, these megacities are also at risk of earthquakes causing great human and property losses. 85% of people killed by earthquakes worldwide are on the southern flank of the Eurasian continent.

Experts warn that, with a high population density, the number of deaths in earthquakes (if they happen) in Asian megacities can be up to 7 digits.

Urban managers should pay special attention to enhancing the earthquake resistance of three important infrastructures, including schools, hospitals and fire stations because these infrastructures play a significant role in earthquake consequences recovery work.
