The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake's epicenter was about 57km southwest of the small city of Mapastepech in the southwest of Chiapas state and 66km deep. In Guatemala and the capital of El Salvador, El Salvador can also feel these geological vibrations.
With most of the area located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Mexico has often suffered from strong earthquakes in recent years. In December 2011, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake also rocked the southern state of Guerrero, causing many casualties.
