Eat onions and apples to prevent pancreatic cancer
A study has just shown that a high-flavonoid diet reduces the risk of pancreatic cancer. Flavonoids are antioxidants that are abundant in onions, cabbage, apples and some vegetables.
Dr. Laurence Kolonel and colleagues at the Hawaii Cancer Research Institute followed throughout 8 years of 183,000 people living in the southwestern United States (California and Hawaii). Participants in the study regularly answered questionnaires about their diets and monitored their health, especially the occurrence of pancreatic cancer.
As a result, people who follow a flavonoid-rich diet have the lowest risk of pancreatic cancer. Especially those who smoke under this diet have reduced their risk of pancreatic cancer by 59%.
The researchers explained that flavonoids help prevent pancreatic cancer by slowing the growth of cancer cells and fighting oxidative stress.
