Eating a lot is more prone to dementia

A new US study found that people who ate a high intake of 2,100-6,000 calories a day could increase their risk of dementia twice as much as those with a reasonable diet over the age of 70.

A new US study found that people who ate a high intake of 2,100-6,000 calories a day could increase their risk of dementia twice as much as those with a reasonable diet over the age of 70.

The study tested 1,233 people aged 70 - 89 years with dementia in Olmsted, Minn. Test participants were informed about the calories they ate or drank in a food questionnaire and divided into 3 balance groups based on their daily calorie consumption. Results showed that 163 people had mild memory impairment (MCI).

'We follow the response sample of calorie intake of participants who consume calories higher than the daily prescribed calorie level, at higher risk of MCI syndrome ' , study author Yonas E. Geda, member of the American Institute of Neurology, said.

Consuming between 2,100 and 6,000 calories a day can cause memory problems in the elderly.

More significantly, the number of people with MCI is more than twice that of normal people in the highest calorie consumption group compared to the lowest calorie consumption group. The consequences of high calorie consumers lead to many different diseases such as diabetes, stroke . causing a high risk of dementia syndrome.

'Maximum calorie reduction and eating a diet that conforms to a reasonable diet are ways to prevent senile dementia ', Geda recommends.

This study will be revealed at the 64th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in New Orleans on April 21-28.
