Professor Phyllis Lee, behavioral psychologist at the University of Stirling in England and chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council of Amboseli Elephant Conservation Fund in Kenya, and a colleague follow a herd of elephants in Amboseli National Park at Kenya. They also used data on elephants that other researchers had collected in 38 years, Telegraph reported.
The two scientists concluded that, in terms of character, all African elephants belong to one of the following four groups: leader, big but gentle; immature but active, hardworking and reliable. The leading elephants always seek to influence other members in the herd and decide the movement of the herd.
'Each member of the elephant group has a unique personality. We find that each type of personality plays a significant role in the herd development, dealing with hazards and adapting to adverse conditions , 'said Professor Lee.
In addition to humans, perhaps elephants are the only species possessing personality in the animal world, Lee said. The ability to influence other members and maintain friendly relationships are two important factors for leading elephants in Africa. Meanwhile, new force and dominance are necessary for the leaders of other animals.
