Europe's first solar-powered trains
Italy has demonstrated Europe's first solar-powered train, reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.
Solar panels on the roof do not make the boat run, but it supplies the air conditioning, lighting and safety systems on board.
Italian Minister of the Environment Altero Matteoli said the first 10 prototype trains will pave the way for significant future growth.
Trenitalia's Italian general manager, Roberto Testore, says Trenitalia is investing heavily to innovate and enhance its fleet. According to him, the number of train accidents has halved over the past eight years.
Solar panels are currently being used to provide part of the trains in Japan. A miniature railway in Wales is also powered by solar energy.
