According to the BBC, doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital said it was an extremely rare tumor, called an oral uterus, which put the fetus in critical condition.

They decided very boldly to conduct surgery to save the life of the fetus.

First, Gonzalez's mother was given local anesthesia with a needle inserted through the amniotic fluid surrounding her fetus. After that, they used a laser to remove the tumor right at the mouth, and the surgery was completed in over an hour.

Five months later, Leyna was born, weighing 3.9kg. Until now, the baby has been 20 months and completely healthy.

This surgery has just been published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
