The analytical results show that this pearl has a diameter of 2mm and is determined to be dated about 7,500 years ago. This means that this is the oldest natural pearl in the world today. The previous record belongs to about 5,000 years old Jomon pearl in Japan.
The oldest natural pearl in the world dates back about 7,500 years.
'Previous jewelers and jewelers recognized the 5,000-year-old Jomon pearl in Japan as the world's oldest pearl. Our new finding suggests this is not true , 'said Dr. Vincent Charpentier on Live Science.
In recent years, archaeologists have unearthed a total of 101 Neolithic pearls in the Arabian coast. These pearls are mainly created by two species of mussels Pinctada margaritifera and Pinctada radiata .
The discovery of French scientists is evidence that the Neolithic fishermen in the Arabian Sea area began diving into the sea to catch boys to get pearls, even though this work is very difficult and dangerous at that time.
In addition to taking pearls, the Neolithic fishermen also know how to use P. margaritifera's shell to create fish hooks for large fish such as tuna and sharks. Pearls are often used for jewelry making and in religious ceremonies. Evidence is that archaeologists have discovered unburnt pearls in ancient tombs in the Kingdom of Umm al Quwain.
