Huge ink images are posted on the Kaikoura Marine Life Center Facebook page. The center said the eye of the squid was 19 cm in diameter. Biologist Megan Lewis said it was an adult female, but could not determine the exact age.
The ink is now taken into the aquarium and stored in a freezer with an external glass door.
