Give up the worry of running out of electricity with the world's first batteryless phone

Researchers at the University of Washington, USA, have successfully tested a batteryless phone.

This is a great leap forward in technology to gradually eliminate the fear of running out of battery. Instead of using a regular rechargeable battery, this phone collects energy from the surrounding environment to provide necessary operations.

They experimented with calling with the Skype application, a testament to the ability to commercialize this product. According to Associate Professor Shyam Gollakota, this phone is the first in the world not to use batteries.

People abandon traditional audio conversion technology, instead they contrast the difference between the vibrations of the voice and the signal station of the mobile station. This process will encode voice into reflected radio signals and this uses very little energy.

To receive the signal, the phone decodes the radio signal into a vibrating form to put it into the speaker. In testing, a switch between two functions is used.

With components available, the team has demonstrated the functionality of this unique phone. Not only does it normally call, it can also use the Skype software functions. Another advantage of this technology is the utilization of available telecommunications and Wifi broadcast stations.

Currently, the phone still needs power to operate and consume about 3.5 microWatt. This amount of electricity can be provided in two ways: One is to take advantage of the radio power of the transmitter, two from the solar battery.

Other non-battery technologies often require successive charging and use cycles. Meanwhile, the phone must meet the ability to maintain calls continuously. This is the biggest challenge for removing the battery completely from the phone.

The next step in the study, they will try to increase the distance of phone usage and secure encryption for call information. They have also set a goal to make video calls with this phone.
