Global embassy account is hacked

Username and password of more than 100 email accounts at embassies and governments have been released online. Using this information, anyone can access and scour content within the exposed accounts.

The Swedish Computer Office (CS) confirmed the above information, and also talked to the author of the "account list".

Dan Egerstad, a Swedish free security expert, proved quite open when contacted by CS.

" I conducted an experiment and stumbled upon this information, " Egerstad said. However Egerstad claims he has never used them to log into any account.

Disclosed information includes the name of the embassy and government agency, the address to the email server, username and password.

Among the organizations that are "named" on the list are the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indian Embassy in the US and the Russian embassy in Sweden.

CS itself also confirmed that this login information is quite accurate. Egerstad sent them an email sent on August 20, to a Russian embassy by the Royal Swedish Court. The employee then authenticated the content of the letter when contacted by CS.

" When things like this happen, you often find ways to contact the problem, tell them to fix the error. But in this case, the nature of the case is too serious. I can't call all countries. "Egerstad said.

" I hope this publicity will force countries to act faster than usual ."

CS contacted the Russian and Indian embassies in Stockholm. The Russian Embassy confirmed that the information leak was real and said they had changed their username and account. Meanwhile, the Indian embassy declined to comment on the incident.
