Green tea can fight blood cancer
An extract of green tea called EGCG may be useful in treating white blood disease through its ability to kill evil cells.
The Mayo Clinic, USA, has found that 3 out of 4 lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) patients treated here are clinically positive, after drinking green tea and taking pharmaceuticals containing EGCG is sold without prescription. The condition improved markedly in the following months. This result is published in the online journal Leukemia Research.
CLL is a type of blood and bone marrow cancer in which lymphocytes replace healthy blood cells. The disease usually occurs during or after middle age and progresses slowly. Previously, the Mayo Clinic also had an in vitro study, showing that EGCG kills blood cancer cells in CLL patients by severing communication signals to help them survive.
In the new report, lead researcher Tait Shanafelt observed a patient who had swollen lymph nodes, after taking green tea capsules twice a day for a year, the lymph nodes were smaller. The remaining amount of lymphocytes significantly improved after drinking 8 cups of green tea daily. However, these observations are not sufficient to draw conclusions about the effect of CLL treatment on green tea. People still do not know the optimal dose, therapy and long-term side effects of this therapy.
Green tea is famous for its anti-cancer ability, due to its high levels of antioxidants, helping to prevent cell damage leading to cancer, heart disease .
