Lizard species are green and extremely poisonous
Blue blood is poisonous blood, no creature can stand it. So why did this lizard evolve like that?
The snakes, frogs, or reptilian lizards we often see are red in color. But you know, it turns out that there are green blood lizards in the world - which are probably green (green), just like in Hollywood fantasy movies.
Indeed! On an island in the Pacific Ocean near New Guinea, experts from the University of Louisiana (USA) have tried to study a green blood lizard that lives here. They belong to the Prasinohaema group (Greek, meaning "green blood"), and previous scholars think that they seem to have evolved from a common ancestor.
Lizard species have blue blood.
There are a total of 6 species of lizard possessing green blood, although their blood is somewhat different, going from dark to light. However, the new study shows that it turns out that all six species came from separate lizard branches, in which at least four times evolved from lizards with red blood.
It is known that the red color of the blood is caused by hemoglobin with the composition of iron. But in these species, colors are replaced by molecules called biliverdin . Biliverdin is a pigment that often occurs in green bile, and will be toxic if the dose is sufficient. The skin will turn pale, bruises appear, and the body cannot grow normally.
In other words, green blood is poisonous blood . Therefore, the fact that these lizards possess this blood color is really difficult to understand, not to mention losing 4 times to get it. They should have died, but the truth is not.
Green blood is poisonous blood.
Zachary Rodiguez - the author of the study, said that this blood color could bring some advantages to lizards, such as limiting the free radicals in the blood, reducing the incidence of disease. In fact, some species of fish, insects and amphibians also have a high biliverdin density, and all give such advantages.
"Although they have the highest biliverdin concentration in the animal world, they seem to have evolved to be resistant to that toxin," Rodiguez said.
According to him, this is a very interesting discovery. Because biliverdin in the human body has been recorded can kill parasites causing. If you know more about this lizard species, we have the ability to permanently prevent the disease that once killed millions of people around the world.
