Hong Kong is about to lose winter

Winter may disappear from this administrative zone within 50 years, with the number of cold days decreasing to zero. Cold days are defined as days where the temperature falls below 12 degrees Celsius.

Between 1961 and 1990, each winter in Hong Kong averaged 21 cold days, but this figure halved in 2000. Within the last century, the temperature here increased by about 1.2 degrees C , nearly double the speed of the globe, Lam said.

Hong Kong, with its current geographical location, is classified in the subtropical region. But every day urbanization and global warming are present, "we have really become tropical," Lam said.

The number of hot summer nights in Hong Kong, with an average temperature of over 28 degrees Celsius, jumped to 30 per year - almost four times since the 1990s.
