Hundreds of earthquake aftershocks rocked Italy

Central Italy yesterday continued to shake by hundreds of aftershocks, hindering rescue efforts after the earthquake that killed more than 200 people.

The BBC said a 4.3-magnitude aftershock occurred in the afternoon, prompting rescue workers to flee buildings that were falling.

At least 250 people were killed after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the central Italian mountains early on August 24. More than 300 people are being treated at the hospital and dozens of people are thought to be still stuck under collapsed houses.

About 5,000 lifeguards are using bare hands or heavy machinery to dig up ruins to race against time, hoping to find survivors.

The towns affected are mostly sparsely populated but attract a lot of tourists in the summer so the exact number of missing people is difficult to identify.

The rescue team asked people to disable wifi network passwords to help them connect in the process of finding victims.

Italy often faces earthquakes because it lies on two lines that break the y guy . Some local newspapers say authorities have not tried to improve the quality of buildings in areas where earthquakes are common.

"I must say that anger is greater than pain and anger when thinking that this damage should be preventable , " Italian writer Dacia Maraini told Corriere Della Sera daily.
