Livescience said, Neil Montgomery, a Keene University psychologist in the US, received many complaints from school administrators. According to these people, parents of many students showed excessive concern for their children, including things in school. For example, many parents always try to interfere with the work between students and the school even if their children can solve themselves. In the face of that fact, Montgomery decided to study students who were over-embraced by their parents to see how that covering affected their personality.
Montgomery and colleagues met about 300 newly enrolled male students and asked them to fill out a survey with questions designed to assess their parents' interest in them.
'We choose new students because the time they spend at university is a frightening period for parents who like to cover their children. At that stage, parents begin to be unable to control all aspects of their lives and cannot make them follow their wishes, ' Montgomery said.
In the survey, psychologists put up many sentences like 'Parents contact a school administrator and solve all problems on my behalf' , 'On the day of enrollment, my parents stayed with me. until the evening to make sure that I can adapt to the new environment ' , ' If I don't call after two days of enrollment, my parents will contact me '. Students must fill in a scale to show their level of agreement with these statements.
The results showed that only about 10% of new students received excessive attention from their parents. If only for female students, that rate is 13%, for men only about 5%. In most cases, the mother is overly concerned.
After thoroughly investigating the over-enveloped group of students, the stories found that they were willing to accept new ideas lower than their peers. In addition, they are more likely to fall into a negative state - such as embarrassment, anxiety, impulsiveness, functional neurosis - than students with normal parents.
'When standing in front of a student who is always dependent on others, easily depressed, often anxious and impulsive, dislikes new ideas and actions, do you think that person will become a student? good? I think the answer is exactly no , "Montgomery said.
In contrast, students who are not surrounded by their parents are independent in their thinking, ready to accept new ideas, do not often fall into impulsive or anxious states.
Although Montgomery's research is small, he thinks that being overly concerned by parents is not a blessing for children, because they will be more difficult than others in adapting to life when to adulthood.
Montgomery stresses that not all children who are overly concerned by their parents will become citizens with negative personalities. However, he thinks that parents who like to embrace their children should rethink how they are raising and teaching children. He hopes other psychologists will conduct large-scale surveys with many children - such as primary school students and high school students. According to Montgomery, such investigations will provide a clearer picture.
