Ice rains in the United States killed many people

President George W Bush has decided to bail out some affected areas. Meteorological forecasters say the storm is on its way to the northeast and in New England snow can fall as thick as 30 cm.

Ice rain is a phenomenon that occurs when the rain falls and the temperature drops again, causing the water to freeze before landing, creating a layer of ice sometimes thicker than gasoline.

Natural disasters

The new disaster caused trees, lampposts, power grids and traffic congestion in the states of Missouri and Oklahoma, where the number of casualties was also greatest. In Iowa, Texas, New York and Maine also have deaths.

President Bush declared a state of emergency in Oklahoma.

 

There, 350 national guards went knocking on the door to check the situation of people in the most affected areas, and helped clean roads and restore the electricity network. On Sunday, 415 flights were canceled at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Unusual cold weather also occurs in California state, which is known for being sunny all year round. Farmers in many parts of the state had to use warm air blowers to protect their citrus plantations from frost.

The National Meteorological Agency said Tuesday that ice rains could hit the East Coast.
