Pakistan: 65 people were killed by flooding

Police and Pakistani authorities on July 1 said heavy rains and floods killed more than 60 people in the southwest of the country and left about 200,000 people homeless.

In Baluchistan, hundreds of villages in at least 10 districts were flooded, affecting 1.5 million people. In some areas, 90% of crops, cattle and houses are destroyed. According to the High Commissioner for Disaster Relief Ali Gul Kurd, 'at least 54 people have been killed in the last 6 days, 30 of them in Turbat district - where many villages sink below the depth of 1 meter.

Police said this morning (July 1), four more people, including one woman and three young children, were killed when their house collapsed in the Machh area. In Bela district, five others were killed by swamp water and two others were crushed to death when their roof collapsed. The number of casualties may still rise.

Many naval aircraft, helicopters and ships have carried tents, food, blankets and medicines to affected areas, including coastal towns of Gwadar, Pasni and Ormara. Better weather on July 1 helped the relief work to be more convenient.

Last Tuesday, the tropical storm Yemyin hit coastal areas in Baluchistan and Sindh province causing heavy rain, leaving about 200,000 people to leave their homes.
