What is special is that the specimen of this new butterfly is named after the Vicroy Ministreak, which was collected and put into the insect collection at the Smithsonian Institution a century ago. But all this time it was not recognized as a new species because it was mistakenly identified with a similar butterfly called Ministreak Gray.

Writing in Zookeys magazine, President of the North American Butterfly Association Jeffrey Glassberg and the butterfly manager of the Smithsonian Institute said the new butterfly is distinguished from the Gray Ministreak through eye color. Vicroy has a distinctive olive green color while Gray has brown or black eyes. Two species also differ slightly in the wing model.

According to UPI News Agency, Vicroy seems to be the newest butterfly species identified in the US but it is difficult to find any new species in the country.

Meanwhile there are hundreds of strange butterflies in Central and South America waiting to be discovered.
