Direct translation tool has just been launched at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany.

'The translation tool is not always perfect, but it helps students learn better when watching lectures better because there are no language barriers ,' said Alex Waibel, a professor at KIT and Carnegie Mellon University. in Pittsburgh (USA), said.

The first version of this tool will translate German into English, reflecting the need to use English as an international language in the student community in Germany. But later versions of the translation tool will migrate more languages.

This service can also read and translate written texts of past and present lectures. "It automatically captures the lecture, converts it into written text and then translates it into English in real time , " explains Waibel. "Students can follow the lecture via computer or mobile phone."

Waibel built this translation tool based on automatic voice recognition technology and translated over 20 years of research. The project is funded by the European Commission and the Excellent Initiative Fund in Germany.

This is a great way to overcome language barriers and to open up opportunities to study at foreign universities for every talented student in the world. America still leads the world in attracting foreign students - with more than 723,000 students studying in US universities by the fall of 2010.
