At the present time, PhotoDNA is being used by Microsoft and Facebook.

PhotoDNA is an image recognition technology developed and developed by Microsoft and Dartmouth University. In essence, this technology has an approach similar to facial recognition technology, which uses complex algorithms to create a special type of identity for each photo - just like a person's fingerprint. From an image obtained, we can compare its identity with other images, thereby tracing the clue to the origin of the image.

A Microsoft spokesperson said PhotoDNA also has the ability to restore an image from its identity, which allows investigating agencies not to directly store infringing photos on their systems. . Moreover, copies of images can still be discovered even when edited or resized.

Microsoft is currently providing this technology through the free NetClean Analyze tool, or directly providing source code for investigating agencies. In addition, the group is developing new technologies for the system to track and search for child abuse. Currently the system is being managed and exploited by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
