Japan: 1.6 million tons of contaminated water seeps into the ground

TEPCO officials said they found water leaked from the seams of the moat on December 21.

NHK and Voice of Russia reported that Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said about 1.6 tons of contaminated water in trenches around the contaminated water tank at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant No. 1 were Soaked into the ground.

They determined that the concentration of strongtium 90 radioactivity in contaminated water was 93 becquerels (becquerels) / liter and that the water did not leak into the sea. This level of radiation is nine times higher than the maximum level set by the government for radioactive water allowed to be discharged.

According to TEPCO, water leaks are caused by broken joints. Based on the radioactive concentration in the water, they assumed that the contaminated water was not contaminated water contained in the leaked tank, but that rainwater had been recovered from moats around the reservoir.

The high concentration of strongtium 90 in the country is due to the rain that absorbed the radioactive material released into the surrounding environment after the nuclear accident in March 2011.

TEPCO officials claim that contaminated water does not leak into the sea because there is no sewage pipeline near the site.
