Lack of sleep easily irritated

People who are sleep deprived tend to be more anxious as well as more irritable than those who get enough sleep, because the brain is inherently sensitive to things that we are not satisfied with when tired. The conclusion was made after scientists at Japan's Center for Neurology and Psychiatry monitored the mood and sleep of 14 people.

The conclusion comes after scientists at Japan's Center for Neurology and Psychiatry monitored the mood and sleep of 14 men, according to The Yomiuri Shimbun on July 2.

The team asked these men to sleep four hours a day for five consecutive days and then slept for eight hours a day for the next five days.

At the same time, the team monitored the brain activity of these people on the last day of the two test periods mentioned above.

After 4 hours of sleep a day and watching scary faces, the amygdala of participants became more alert than 8 hours a day.

Amygdala is a part of the brain that is thought to play an essential role in handling emotions.

The researchers also found that people with amygdala became alert because lack of sleep showed signs of becoming more anxious, more irritable and confused when psychologically tested.
