Lack of sleep is not good for the heart
That was the conclusion of the University of Pittsburgh medicine department (USA) after following up on 1,210 people aged 30-54 years.
Lack of sleep has been found to increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, a combination of symptoms including high cholesterol, increased blood pressure, large waist index and unstable blood sugar levels.
This syndrome is considered an early warning sign of diabetes and heart disease, and may be limited when applying a healthier lifestyle or taking medications.
According to the study results, compared to people who slept 7 or 8 hours a night, the risk of metabolic syndrome nearly doubled in those who slept less than 6 hours.
In addition, insufficient sleep is also found to increase the likelihood of obesity. The reason is that lack of sleep affects the balance of hormones that control appetite and bloating.
