There are 3 lakes on the mountain with 3 different colors and change over time. The phenomenon of discolored lake water was first recorded in 1905. In the past, this process often took decades, but later it became shorter.

Before 2006, these lakes were red, blue and white. From 2006 to 2008, the red lake gradually turned dark brown, the blue lake turned light green, while the white lake became increasingly darker and eventually turned black.

In the last 3 years, the lakes on Mount Kelimutu, Indonesia continue to change color.

In the last 3 years, Kelimutu mountain lakes continue to change color. Scientists still cannot explain this phenomenon because of minerals, or algae populations in the lake. According to local folklore stories, these lakes are a gathering place for souls, and perhaps supernatural forces have changed the color of the water.

Located at an altitude of nearly 1,700m above the sea level, scenic lakes on Mount Kelimutu are in a mild, cool climate all year round. In addition to visiting the lake, visitors can go for a walk in the pine forest, or visit a small roadside village to enjoy some moke wine, local specialties made from palm tree resin.
