Laser data transmission technology makes internet speed 1,000 times faster

Scientists have discovered a new way of transmitting data to help the internet speed to astonishingly fast.

In a new study published in Nature Communications, scientists at the University of Leeds (UK) said it will take the internet a step further thanks to the technology of superfast data transmission via laser at a level of quantum. In the lab, the transfer rate has reached 100 megabits per second, which is thousands of times faster than the current average speed.

Lasers look the same but they are actually different types. The difference comes from the fact that they emit light at different electromagnetic spectrums in the terahertz frequency range. In the past, micro-level lasers were often used to analyze chemicals, but when applied to data transmission, it produced surprising results.

Accordingly, to transmit data via laser, the researchers will turn on and off the laser source about 100 billion times per second. But the Leeds team has found a way, using sound and light.'Until now we controlled only laser power sources, the technology is currently thought to be optimal, but there are still many limitations. When an electron passes through the optical part of the laser, it passes through a series of 'quantum wells' that emit pulses of light energy. The researchers now turn on the sound waves to control the photons of light emitted by the electron, which will vibrate the quantum well and activate the laser source.

'Basically, we use sound waves to vibrate the particles in the laser. When the process is complete, the laser at the terahertz frequency range at the output will be changed by sound waves and from there we will get the desired results , '' Professor of Physics Tony Kent added about the new technology.

This research has only been initially completed in the lab, and many things need to be completed before it can be applied in practice. However, the future of laser data transmission thousands of times faster is very likely.
