Learn about different types of cancer

Cancer cells in a tumor (including metastatic cells) all come from a single cell that divides into cells. Therefore a cancer can be classified according to the type of cell that originates and according to the location of the cell.

Cancer classification

Tumor

A tumor comes from the abnormal proliferation of cells and forms a mass . The tumor may be benign or malignant. Benign tumors cannot spread or invade other tissues and organs. Often benign tumors can be removed without further treatment.

In contrast, malignant tumors can spread or invade other tissues and organs through the lymphatic or vascular system in a process known as metastasis. The ability of the tumor to spread (metastasize) causes life-threatening tumors that are life-threatening and difficult to treat.

Most cancers are called by the name of the organ or type of cell where they start . For example, cancer that starts in the lungs is called lung cancer. When cancer spreads from the original site to another part of the body, the new tumor has the same type of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary tumor. For example, prostate cancer that spreads to the bone is metastatic prostate cancer (or bone metastatic prostate cancer), not bone cancer, because the cancer has started in the prostate. .

Cancer has a solid tumor

A solid tumor is a block consisting of abnormal growth cells such as cancer in the following areas:

  1. Pancreas
  2. Lung
  3. Stomach
  4. Stomach
  5. Head of neck
  6. Kidney
  7. Rectal
  8. Colon

Patients with these types of tumors often lose weight during the course of the disease. Weight loss is often the first symptom that causes them to see a doctor.

Breast, prostate, ovarian and uterine cancers also lead to solid tumors. People with these cancers often lose weight in the late stages of the disease.

Cancer can be grouped in larger categories:

  1. Carcinoma - cancer originating in the skin or in the lining tissue or covering the internal organs. Examples include: skin cancer, cervical cancer, anal cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, laryngeal cancer, kidney cancer, stomach cancer, various types of testicular and cancer cancers Thyroid letters.
  2. Sarcoma (cancer of connective tissue) - cancer originates in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels or other connective tissue.
  3. Leukemia (leukemia, "white blood disease") - cancer originates in hematopoietic tissue like the bone marrow and produces a large number of abnormal blood cells that enter the bloodstream.
  4. Lymphoma and myeloma (lymphoma, myeloma) - cancer originates in the cells of the immune system.
  5. Central nervous system cancer - cancer originates in the brain and spinal tissues.

Blood cancer

The cancer occurs in the blood does not form solid tumors. Instead, they create an abnormal increase in some types of cells that spread throughout the blood vessels, lymph nodes or bone marrow. For example, in leukemia (leukemia), the body produces an unusually large number of white blood cells. Sometimes, the term liquid tumor is also used in leukemia to refer to the increasing number of abnormal circulatory cells. Lymphoma tumors (lymphoma) are considered to be blood cancers even though they may be present as a clear mass. Patients with loose tumors may develop weight loss when the condition and the course of treatment progress.
