Learning when watching TV will be less effective

Your parents are right, should not just study and turn on the television. New research shows neglect affects learning style, making it difficult to re-apply later knowledge.
"Even if you can learn when you are distracted, it still affects learning, which results in a decline," said Russell A. Poldrack, a professor of psychology at the University of California, USA.
This can affect many young people. The study, conducted by the Kaiser Family Association in the US last year, found students in grades 3 to 12 spend an average of nearly 6.5 hours a day watching television, videos, listening to music, playing video games and computers.
Poldrack explains the brain learning in two different ways. The first way is called recognition learning, related to the medial temporal lobe, in which you learn actively and knowledge is applied flexibly. The second way involves the striatum, called habitual learning.

For example, when learning about a phone number, you simply memorize it, that is, using a learning style of learning and recalling when you need it. The second way is by habit, you press that number 1,000 times and even if you don't remember it intentionally, you can go to the phone and press the right number.
The way to remember is much more effective. If you use habitual learning, you will need to have a phone there to create the environment.
The problem is, Poldrack said, these two forms of competition compete with each other, and when someone is distracted, habitual learning will overwhelm the way learning is claimed.
"Although we need to be versatile in today's world, but you still need to be aware of this. When a child tries to learn a new concept, new information, neglect will be very harmful. it will affect their ability to learn , " Poldrack said.
That doesn't mean that a quiet environment is ideal - music can help learning because it makes people happier. But neglect is always a bad thing.
