Thiessen's research also found that compared to the way adults talk, this particular way of talking can also help children learn words faster . In a series of experiments, his professors and colleagues gave the 8-month-old children live a direct speech that was spoken smoothly with accent and high pitched voices. After 2 minutes, the children can learn the words but are slower than the children who hear similar communication but are told with high accents and accents suitable for children.

This new discovery by Prof. Thiessen also explains why many adults have to struggle to learn a foreign language even though they can be proficient in their native language.
