Lung cancer artist Han Van Tinh how dangerous is it?

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, common in the age of 45 to 70.

Artist Han Van Tinh was diagnosed with lung cancer a year and a half ago. The tumor had spread to his armpit, causing him to go into an emergency room with a poor prognosis.

According to Dr Lim Hong Liang, expert on lung cancer and head face of Parkway Singapore Cancer Center (PCC), lung cancer is the leading cancer of both men and women. The disease most commonly occurs between the ages of 45 and 70.

Lung cancer has 2 main types. The first is non-small cell lung cancer , accounting for about 85 to 87% of total cases. With characteristics that are slower than the rest, up to 40% of cases diagnosed with the disease have spread to other parts of the body. The second is small cell lung cancer , accounting for about 13% to 15% of the total number of cases. This cancer is very active and spreads rapidly, most of the diagnosed cases are in severe resolution, the tumor spreads to other parts of the body.

Studies show that smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer . Common symptoms are persistent cough. Chest X-rays can be detected, but additional diagnostic and biopsy tests are needed to verify. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy can all be used to treat lung cancer.

Many people think that the main cause of lung cancer is increasing due to environmental pollution but not really. According to Dr. Lim, the environment is related to this disease but accounts for a very low rate. For example, people living in polluted environments have a 5% higher incidence of lung cancer than the rest. Specifically, the research results show that people living in polluted environments like the factory, where many cars emit toxic gas only 1.5 times more than those who do not. While smokers are 50 times more likely to develop lung cancer.

Most oncologists claim that tobacco is the main cause of this disease. In the United States, lung cancer ranks first because of the high percentage of smokers. Countries with fewer smokers mean reduced lung cancer . "Worldwide, 80% of lung cancer patients are smokers. It is understandable that 80% of smokers have lung cancer , " Dr Lim said.

Treatment of lung cancer in hospitals is now applied according to standard protocols worldwide. Specifically, patients with stage 1 and stage 2 have surgery to remove the tumor. Stage 3 requires radiotherapy. Stage 4 will use medication to control. However, some patients with stage 1 or 2 stage have been treated with surgery and still have a relapse, the doctor often recommends adding chemicals to reduce the risk.

For stage 3 patients with lung tumors and lymph nodes, the main treatment is radiotherapy but the effect is only about 5 to 8%. Therefore, doctors often specify to transfer more chemicals to increase efficiency by about 20%. Patients in stage 4, when the cancer metastasized, the treatment stopped at the goal of disease control in order to prolong life as long as possible. There are many proven new generation targeted treatment drugs that increase the life expectancy for patients.

According to Dr. Lim, about 10 years ago, people considered lung cancer to be the same medicine, the same treatment. So it leads to the consequences of people responding to drugs, people do not. After careful study, experts divided cancer into smaller layers. The first is small cell lung cancer and non-small cell. Smaller cells subdivided further include adenocarcinoma, squamous carcinoma and large non-specific cells. Then again subdivision of epithelial cancer to make genetic mutations. If the test is positive for any type, there will be a specific drug for that gene. All drugs are oral forms. Therefore, genetic mutation testing for target drug treatment is being considered as the optimal solution to prolong lung cancer patients' lives.
