Scientists believe that lard could be a lubricant for large wooden cars used during the Stonehenge stone circle in the UK, Yahoo News reported on July 16. Fat stains found on ceramic pieces in Durrington Walls, near Stonehenge, were once thought to be used as food for masons. However, according to research team at Newcastle University, the fragments could belong to buckets of animal fat.
"I am interested in having a lot of fat stuck on ceramic pieces and preserved in good condition. I want to know more about why the amount of fat is so much. The pieces of bone excavated here. shows that many pigs are skewered and roasted instead of being cut off as often done if cooked in a pot, " said Dr. Lisa-Marie Shillito at Newcastle University.
According to previous research, rocks weighing up to several tons can be transported by sled with 20 operators. Some rocks are likely to be moved from Wales, more than 200km away. Historians also claim that it is possible that the ancient people divided the process of building Stonehenge into many stages.
"Until now, the scientific community mainly said that animal fat stains in pottery pieces were related to cooking and eating. That made many initial comments being driven in the direction above. However, there are still many problems. The problem is not yet clear and these traces may suggest evidence that the lubricating grease slipped, " Dr. Shillito said.
