Floods in Korea are increasingly serious

About 4,900 houses were destroyed or damaged, while another 8,530 houses were flooded after heavy downpours, pushing nearly 21,400 people into homeless situations. A series of agricultural land is also flooded or flattened.

Earlier, July 28, KCNA reported that a week-long flood in early July killed 88 people and left 63,000 homeless. With its rugged terrain and backward agricultural infrastructure, the country is facing enormous challenges in raising 24 million people.

A group of officials from the International Federation of Red Cross has recently surveyed the flood-affected areas today, saying that people here need assistance with drinking water, food and medicine. The United Nations inspection team has also conducted a survey on areas heavily affected by natural disasters to assess aid needs.

According to last year's report, the United Nations estimates that about 3 million Koreans will need food assistance this year, not to mention natural disasters. Deforestation is rampant, in part to get farming, which has caused Korea to suffer from the growing consequences of floods.
