More than 200 people died from floods in India

Heavy rain during the five days caused flooding in the two southern states of India. At least 205 people died and 750,000 people lost their homes.

According to the AP, floodwaters submerge many villages, severing many traffic systems and crippling communication systems. Large parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are submerged in the country. Army helicopters dropped food and drinking water into hundreds of villages surrounded by floodwaters.

Officials say 168 people in Karnataka state have died and more than 300,000 have left their homes, as of Sunday. Andhra Pradesh has 37 people dead and about 450,000 evacuated. Police said most of the victims died from collapsing houses or being swept into the river by water. Thousands still stuck in villages.

Flooding became worse after the government discharged water from the dams and reservoirs in the two states because of rising water levels.

Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have experienced a severe drought a few weeks ago due to the late rainy season . Weather experts said that a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal caused heavy and unexpected rains.
