NASA is studying how to build houses on the Moon

Settling on Mars is the goal set by scientists around the world and want to conquer in the next 20 years.

Settling on Mars is the goal set by scientists around the world and want to conquer in the next 20 years.

But before humans could live on the red planet, NASA and Behrokh Khoshnevis, a professor at Southern California University are working together to find ways to build bases on the Moon. Once we have completed the plans to build houses on other planets so that people can live, we can conquer more distant planets.

The construction technology that Behrokh and NASA are developing is called Contour Crafting , which is a construction technique developed from 3D printing technology. Basically, it will build the walls of the house in a contoured form, ie the robot arm will spray concrete according to the contours, from low to high, similar to how the 3D printer works.

Contour Crafting construction technology will help reduce costs many times.

In fact, this construction technology is not new, it has appeared in the world for the past 20 years, called 3D panel technology (3D panel). When building walls / floors, people will install the foundation and reinforcement core, then spray the concrete up, this construction is fast and will help the walls to be flat, without needing to use the area for columns and pillars. However, Contour Crafting, which Professor Behrokh offers is more advanced without the need to install reinforcement frames.

Most of the ideas based on other planets are carrying materials from the earth and reassembling. However, the cost of transporting from the Earth to the Moon is extremely expensive, only 1kg takes up to $ 200,000, so Contour Crafting construction technology will help reduce costs many times. Contour Crafting is currently being developed at NASA concept project research center (NIAC) and has passed phase 2, which has been invested in research for $ 500,000 in two years.

Hopefully this 3D construction technology will soon be completed so that people can easily build bases on other planets, opening up the prospect of bringing earth people to explore other planets in the universe.
