Dertouzos graduated from the University of Athens and attended the University of Arkansas under a Fulbright scholarship. He received his doctorate from MIT in 1964 and joined MIT faculty.
Michael Dertouzos became a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Director of the MIT Computer Science Laboratory (LCS) from 1974 to 2001.
During Michael Dertouzos' tenure, LCS innovated in many different areas, including RSA encryption, spreadsheets, NuBus, X Window System and Internet.
Dertouzos was instrumental in determining the World Wide Web Consortium and bringing it to MIT. He is a strong supporter of Project GNU, Richard Stallman and FSF.
He was the one who predicted how the internet would affect people's daily lives with the popularity of personal computers and help maximize that potential.
As early as 1980, Dertouzos wrote about the 'Information Market' a concept he extended in his 1997 book What Will Be: How the New World of Information Will Change Our Lives (What will be: How the new information world will change our lives.
