A group of electrical engineers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have sought to keep mobile phones and laptops running longer, more times than existing devices after fully charging.
To do this, the team focuses on transforming digital memory devices as they are the most power consuming unit.

The mobile device's temporary cache contains a thin metal wire, where information is needed to access data, and the data flows through it to retrieve data. Therefore, the smaller the fiber size, the lower the power consumption. Researchers have replaced the carbon nanotubes with 10,000 times smaller strands of hair, so memory chips are faster to access but less power-consuming.
Professor Eric Pop, who led the research team, said the move would help users plug their mobile device into the charger overnight and use it for weeks, even months. His team is also researching ways to recharge the mobile device through heat, kinetic energy and solar energy. (By Telegraph)
