Employees temporarily disconnected part of the 66 kV line to ensure safety for two special guests, according to Bruce Owen, Manitoba Hydro representative . "We are not sure why the bears climbed the poles. This rarely happens, especially in this traditional farming area," Owen said. He guessed the bears were frightened by something and climbed high to stay safe.
Owen hoped the bears would climb down on their own but they were quite comfortable with their new resting place. Finally, the rescue team sat on the electric crane, approached the bears and pointed a long stick at them."Waving the stick is enough to make the bears wake up and they climb down safely," Owen said.
North American black bears (Ursus americanus) are omnivores, adults can weigh 90-270 kg. Their main foods include grass, roots, berries and insects. Although they are called black bears, their fur may be blue-gray, green-black or brown.
