Parrots are extremely intelligent species but why are they capable of that?

In terms of intellect, parrots sometimes lose only to crows. But why does that small brain have such remarkable intelligence.

Parrots are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds, with the ability to imitate speech like humans. Perhaps in the bird world, they just lost to the crows.

But have you ever wondered what makes their intelligence better than other birds? It is a very difficult question, but it seems that science has found the answer.

Neuroscientists at the University of Alberta (Canada) have identified a special neural circuit in the brain of parrots. They believe that this is the reason behind their superior intelligence.

Special neural circuits in parrots are the cause behind their superior intelligence.

Specifically, experts used brain samples of 98 bird species, including chickens, waterfowl, parrots and owls . They discovered an area within the brains of these species called is the intermediate spiral particle (SpM).

This SpM region is responsible for transferring information between the two largest regions of the brain, the cortex and the cerebellum. It can be considered as the basis for creating complex awareness and behavior for birds.

Especially, the size of SpM in parrots is 2 to 5 times larger than other birds. This may explain their intellectual superiority.

The size of the SpM area in parrots is 2 to 5 times greater than that of other birds.

Besides, unlike their relatives, parrots have developed a special connection area between the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum similar to primates. This is also one of the interesting common points between the two species that seem to be not much of this connection.

Scientists say that if we study the brain between two species, we can see many similarities.

Parrots and primates are quite similar.

The team is continuing to learn about parrots' SpM activity to better understand how they handle information. They also hope that the results may help future studies on how the human brain works.
