People who try to cure Ebola with HIV drugs

The treatment process for Ebola patients with HIV medicines from Liberia doctor Gobee Logan has shown some positive results.

Dr. Gobee Logan is the Director of Bomi District Medical Center (Liberia). He is one of only two members in the district health team. Two doctors are taking care of people with Ebola, along with 100 other patients in a general hospital. Two health care doctors for an entire area with 85,000 people.

'In this context, I have to use every brain cell to save lives , ' said Dr. Gobee Logan.

The desperate hours required Logan to look for possible treatment as a physician to prevent the deadly Ebola virus. While waiting for an official Ebola drug to be approved, Dr. Logan personally tested the efficacy of HIV medicines called lamivudine.

'To prevent death from reaching the patients here, I think I need to try this drug,' he said.

The patients tested were: Elizabeth, Susan, Fatu and Massa. Four young girls came to the health center after Ebola infection, they were treated by Dr Logan with anti-HIV drugs. With optimistic progress, four people were able to travel and will soon leave the hospital.

'We are very well cared for. Now I can eat normally and feel much better in my body , 'said one patient.

To date, Dr. Logan has tested lamivudine in 15 patients. Among them, the four girls showed very optimistic signs, the rest were in stable condition, and there were 2 patients who died. When asked if an effective Ebola cure can be produced from a simple place like this, Dr. Logan is confident that this is possible.

Judging by the effectiveness of this particular experimental drug, leading US scientists did not rule out its feasibility, saying that HIV and Ebola cells have many similarities. But experts emphasized that more evidence is needed.

The current Ebola epidemic sweeps through West Africa at an unprecedented speed and on a large scale. The death rate so far is 70% compared to the previous figure of 50%. Among the three hot spots of Ebola epidemic, Liberia is a country heavily affected by the rapidly increasing number of people infected and deaths.
